Nutcracker: An American Nightmare - The Story

Carlton Fairfax II is a prominent psychologist with an unusual method for curing his patients. He uses a combination of intensive drug therapy and high-tech brain wave equipment to accelerate their treatment. His techniques cause major controversy in the world of psychoanalysis. Carlton’s wife April Oakridge Fairfax is also a prominent psychologist whose treatment methods are in total contrast to those of her husband’s. Their opposing viewpoints not only divide the psychoanalytical community it also divides their marriage.

The rift between them widens when Carlton has an affair with Sierra Steinbach, the female Dean of the Psychology Department at the prestigious Greenhill University in order to better his chances of obtaining a high profile position there. Evidence of his affair is sent to April from an anonymous source which causes her much humiliation and pain.

Carlton also struggles with his relationship to his mother Anna and the shadowy memories of his own childhood trauma surrounding the brutal death of his father and his older brother Clyde.

Carlton’s ego leads him to develop a god complex in dealing with his patients. This leads to misjudgments of mental health and, with certain patients, a tendency for sexual involvement as well. He can not resist a difficult challenge and he finds such a challenge with the arrival of John Gard, a patient also suffering with a painful childhood trauma. Carlton is intrigued by John’s case and with a recommendation from Sierra decides to take him on as his patient. However, John begins to turn the tables on Carlton and the two men find themselves locked in a psychological battle that forces Carlton to deal with the horrifying truth about the tragedy of his past.
